Semi-solid extrusion 3D printing in drug delivery and biomedicine: Personalised solutions for healthcare challenges

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an innovative additive manufacturing technology, capable of fabricating unique structures in a layer-by-layer manner. Semi-solid extrusion (SSE) subset material 3D printing, and through the sequential deposition layers gel or paste creates objects any desired size shape. In comparison to other extrusion-based technologies, SSE employs low temperatures which makes it suitable for drug delivery biomedical applications, use disposable syringes provides benefits meeting critical quality requirements pharmaceutical use. Besides manufacturing, has attracted increasing attention field bioelectronics, particularly manufacture biosensors measuring physiological parameters as means trigger release from medical devices. This review begins by highlighting major process properties that influence feasibility transforming design into object, follows with discussion on current developments their applications fields pharmaceutics, bioprinting bioelectronics. Finally, advantages limitations this technology are explored, before focusing its potential clinical suitability preparing personalised medicines.
